body and soul

text by Fernando Farina

Jessica Trosman throws herself body and soul into her artwork. She approaches matter in an unusual way. When she sculpts her pieces, she unleashes the power of all their components -fabrics, metals, plastics-, simple, light elements that she exempts from any functionality. She chooses them for their colors and textures and she combines, folds, crushes and inflates them while letting them exude energies that are often unexpected. Although her skills as an apparel designer and artist are present in this encounter, she decides to go one step further by assuming that it is a kind of dialogue, an alchemical experience in which the materials manifest themselves on their own terms.

In this space of creation and communication, she starts by working with soft elements to develop solid pieces, small and large sculptures, objects that escape from their bases, that spill out and end up merging in her own hands. They are complex, sensual, and they allow us to notice the gestures. These process encompass and idea of universality, a persuasion that enables us to express, and feel something essential that is communicated in different (or numerous or many) ways and could be perceived with all our senses.
